The Lost at Sea

Inspired by Matthew 7:13-14

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

The Lost at Sea

This underwater scene occurs above water in earthly life every day.

Obstacles confront us, you can follow Christ or the crowd.

“The Lost at Sea” is about discernment, courage and faith, about paths we take through our day and over our lives.

The popular way is often selected by momentum, not conscience thought.

Jesus says, “the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

This is a visualized prayer, enabled by the One, who knows the way,

to summon the one who does not yet know the One, who knows the way.

But who is only an obstacle away…

Behind the Scenes

I did a handful of renders with “Icthus” the Christian fish symbol. This particular image worked out the best but also the hardest one to finalize. This image toured around the United States for about three years. It was a part of the CIVA (Christians in the Visual Arts) touring exhibition entitled “The Beautiful”.

I originally had intentions to add many more metaphors into the image. I was going to make one side of the sea floor just colorful plants and very bright and the other side just darker plants with little light. I had the idea of making the school of fish on the left moving into a pitch black sea symbolic of ignorance. However, the computer was stressing out due to the thousands of plants (over 50,000), multiple lights above the surface and complex textures. So for the sake of the computer and my own sanity I had to edit the ideas down somewhat.
